Since 1841, the Dorset County Show has been held as a celebration of all things Dorset.

The Dorset County Show promises to offer superb family entertainment, whilst at the same time it will showcase agriculture, great shopping and much more.

Looking After chickens

Looking after Chickens

So you are either thinking about looking after Chickens, or you have made the decision you are going to. There are a few things to consider at this stage. Here at Crawfords Feed we are always giving out our advice, experience and knowledge. If it means that your chickens are looked after and kept properly, we are happy to share this article with you.

First things first, you want to have healthy chickens - we will talk about the feeding side later, and we will refer to our site www.crawfordsfeed.co.uk

Health

You will have to be prepared to check your Poultry on a regular basis. You will need to be looking for any changes in the comb, crop, eyes and droppings - these may all indicate health problems.

Healthy Poultry - you can identify healthy poultry by the following:

• Shiny, bright and alert eyes
• Intense coloured red comb and wattles
• Shiny full, smooth plumage
• Leg scales should be smooth, not lifting
• Moist vent, free from crustiness or bleeding
• Free from ticks, parasites and mites
• Curious and actively picking and scratching for feed

Are your chickens healthy? This is not an all time consuming task, in fact, when you let your chickens out in the morning, they will be so full of energy looking to be fed, it will give you ample opportunity to take note of these kind of identifying marks.

Some, who name their chickens, will even take note with a pad and pen, almost like a register. Needless to say, this is too much of a task when caring for a larger number of birds.
