Feeding Chickens Part I

Feeding Chickens - Kitchen feed - Part I

Now, as all chicken keepers know, every chicken will have its own mind. It will have its own personality with Likes and Dislikes. However, we often are asked about what else can be given to chickens, and whether or not certain foods are ok.

We have been able to put this article together for you and we  hope that it will educate any that have previously asked us.
We will look at the food, the serving type and then the options or notes.

Apples - raw and/or applesauce - Apple seeds contain cyanide, but not in sufficient quantities to kill.
Asparagus - Raw or cooked - Okay to feed, but not always a favourite.
Bananas - Without the peel - High in potassium and it is a great treat.
Beans - Well-cooked only, never dry - Also, greenbeans.
Beets - no notes needed - fine.
Berries - All kinds - A treat, especially strawberries.
Breads - All kinds; good use for stale bread and rolls - Feed starches in moderation.
Broccoli & Cauliflower - No notes needed - Tuck in a suet cage and they will pick at it all day.
Cabbage & Brussels Sprouts - Whole head - Hang a whole cabbage from the coop ceiling in winter so they have something to play with and greens to eat.
Carrots - Raw & Cooked - They like carrot foliage too.
Cheese - Including cottage cheese - Feed in moderation, fatty but a good source of protein & calcium
Corn - on cob and canned, raw and cooked
Crickets - alive - Great treat - provides protein and it is fun to watch the chickens run to catch them
Cucumbers - Let mature for yummy seeds and flesh.
Fruit - pears, peaches, cherries, applies,
Grains - Bulgar, Flax, niger, wheatberries etc.

We do not want to put too many in one article. We have quite a few more to put into another article. So please keep your eyes peeled for the follow on.
